Penang 吕家 打石街 beef noodle soup

If  you  happen  to  be  viewing  the  famous children on bicycle  mural  in  Muntri  Street,  you  can  make  a  makan  stop  at  this  nearby  beef  noodle  shop  located  at  the  junction  of  Chulia  Street  and  Beach  Street (Lebuh  Pantai).  It  is  an  old   coffee  shop  with  marble-topped  tables.  The  only  other  hawker  stall  here  sells  oyster  omelette.

Beef noodle - RM9

I    called  for  a  small  bowl  of  beef  kway  teow soup.  It  came  with  beef  balls,  slices  of  beef,  a  chunk  of  darker  beef(brisket  maybe?),   bean  sprouts, a  few  tripe  strips  and  generous  pieces  of  tendon.   The  broth  had  a  satisfying  deep  flavour  lifted  a  notch  by  coriander  leaves.  The  meat  was  both  tender  and  chewy.  The  tendons  were  my  favourite – stewed to  an  incomparable  jelly-like  texture  which  is  kind  to  my  jaws  without  disappointing  my enjoyment  of   a  chew .   The  piquant  chili  sauce  went  very  well  with  the  soup.   All  in  all,  it  is  the  best  beef  soup  I  have  had  in  Penang  Island.

Penang Sungai Ara Oriental Chicken Chop

Le Petit Paris (The Little Paris) located inside Sungai Ara Food Court served all kinds of western food. I came upon the chance to try their Oriental Chicken Chop and was amazed by the elegant   and  appetitzing presentation.

Oriental Chicken Chop - RM 9

The chicken was  perfectly  crisp.  The  flesh  was  succulent.  I  could  tell  I  was  not  eating  defrosted  frozen  meat.  Every  bite  was  a  delight,  highlighted  by  the  sweet  tangy  sauce. Greasy  french  fries  did  not  appear.  Thank  God.   It  was  healthily  paired  with  a  small  serving  of   sauteed  brinjal,  pasta,  boiled  carrots  and  a  scoop  of  mashed  potatoes.  However  the  lumpy   mash  potatoes  could  be  improved.

Basic Mash Potatoes Recipe

Bored of your daily rice routine? Well here is a simple recipe about mash potatoes.

          Ingredients
          Potatoes
          Black pepper powder
          Butter
          Milk
          Salt

  1. Add salt, water and potatoes into the pot and start to boil for about 40 minutes to 1 hour.
  2. To check if the potatoes is fully cooked, use a knife and stab it. If it comes out smoothly and clean, congratulation you have become a professional potato killer.
  3. Remove the potatoes from the pot and peel it when it is hot.
  4. Then, mash the potatoes in the pot with a whisk.
  5. Add in butter, milk, salt, black pepper powder one at a time and stir quickly about 5 to 10 minutes with low medium heat.
  6. "Ta pao" KFC chicken and eat with it while it is hot.
1.Boil

2.Stab

3.Peel

4.Mesh

5.Power puff girl ingredient

5.Stir

6.Eat

Facts:

  • Salt water helps to heat up the water faster. Thus, lesson the cooking time.
  • Do not boil the potatoes starting with hot water, as the outer layer will cook much faster than the inner. Hence, contributing to uneven cooking.
  • It is way easier to mash the potatoes when they are hot.

Try it at home and tell me your experience. XD

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my father for being a co-photographer reluctantly.

Bukit Jambul Vietnamese Spicy Beef Noodle

This delicacy is hidden in the inner corner of Mekong Kopitiam, just directly opposite of the Bukit Jambul laksa stall (http://simplyfoodheaven.blogspot.my/2015/09/bukit-jambul-laksa.html).

The beef spicy noodle is as humble as the Vietnamese lady who serve us. Spring onions, basil leaves and zesty lime compliment each other well enough. Take a bite into the tender slice of beef and it instantly melt in your mouth. However, I don't particularly like the layer of oil floating on top of the broth and artificial taste of the ham...., just a personal preference though.

Penang Bukit Jambul Laksa

This is personally my most favourite Laksa of all time. What is so special about it? Well, it would be their generosity in everything!!!!!They manage to strike a perfect balance in taste with the combination of "bunga kantan", red onion. mint, mackerel and their special Laksa soup. Seldom, Laksa seller offer "bunga kantan" cause it is quite expensive in the market. In addition to that, the Laksa soup is betul betul "KAO"!!!! The proportion of mackerel  to liquid is 1:3!!!! Honestly, I have no idea how they can make a profit in this inflationary days.

Deep Fried Popiah - 3 for RM2.00

Their Popiah stand alone is a "so so" only. However, when you dip it together with the Laksa it became insanely delicious. You could call it the ultimate match made in heaven.
